Choose by who maintains it

  • WordPress.org plus a host gives the most control and portable files, but you own updates and backups.
  • Hostinger Website Builder or Wix means less DIY work, and more redesign if you leave.
  • Shopify fits when the site is really a store.

Check before paying

  • Hostinger Builder Premium is ₹139 a month, renewing at ₹449 (48-month prepay, 23 Oct 2026).
  • Shopify Basic is ₹1,499 a month billed yearly or ₹1,994 monthly, plus a 2% third-party payment fee.
  • Run one test order with UPI and a card on the plan you will buy.
  • Keep the domain login in the business’s name, not a freelancer’s.

Purpose → platform model (India SMB)

Many website-builder roundups quote lab-test scores they never show. ScaleSaathi Editorial will not invent lab rankings. For Indian small businesses the useful question is narrower: what is the site for, who will edit it next month, how much control is worth the maintenance, and — if you sell — can a customer pay with UPI without a surprise failure at checkout.

Four realistic models cover most first sites: WordPress.org + a host (control, portable files), Hostinger Website Builder (hosting + builder prepaid band common in India), Wix (hosted templates, convenience), and Shopify when the site is really a store.

Control has a maintenance cost

More freedom to install plugins or redesign themes is valuable when it serves a clear need. It also creates work: updates, backups, security hygiene, and a person who can restore the site. A hosted builder reduces that stack work and increases switching cost later. Neither is “better” in the abstract — the wrong choice is the one with no realistic owner.

India store path: UPI / Razorpay readiness

If you take orders, design is not the decision. Complete one test order with UPI and a card on the plan you will buy. Check refunds, settlement timing, and how GST invoices appear. Public Razorpay-class domestic fees are often about 2% plus GST on the fee; Shopify Basic also lists a 2% third-party payment provider fee on India pricing (23 Oct 2026). WooCommerce and builder apps still need the gateway configured — marketing pages are not a checkout.

Switching cost / lock-in

Some rebuilding is normal. Avoidable risk is data you cannot export and a domain trapped in someone else’s login. Keep registrar access under the business. Prefer platforms that export pages, products, customers and images. Themes and apps rarely move 1:1 — budget redesign time when you leave Wix or heavily customised builders.

Practical selection test

Before annual payment: add a page, update an image, publish a post or complete a test order, then ask the person who will operate the site whether they can repeat it. The right platform is the one your team can run at a cost you can continue to pay — not the longest feature list.

Website platform selector FAQ

WordPress.org vs Hostinger Builder vs Wix vs Shopify — how should I choose?

Choose the operating model first: who maintains the site, how much control you need, and whether you take online orders. WordPress.org + a host maximises control and exportability but you own updates. Hostinger Builder and Wix reduce DIY. Shopify is a store-first path. Use the finder shortlist, then verify live pricing and a test workflow.

Do I need Shopify if I only need a brochure website?

Usually no. Shopify’s public India plans start around ₹1,499/mo billed yearly (Basic, checked 23 Oct 2026) plus apps and payment fees — heavy for a contact page. Prefer a builder or WordPress.org + hosting unless you already sell online.

How do UPI and Razorpay fit India store checkouts?

For store intent, run a test UPI and card order on the exact plan. WooCommerce commonly uses Razorpay; Shopify India merchants often add Razorpay (or peers) for customer checkout; Wix markets India payment apps from Core+; Hostinger Builder ecommerce markets many methods. Typical public Razorpay-class domestic fee is about 2% + GST on the fee — verify MDR and settlement.

What is switching cost or lock-in?

It is the redesign and data-move pain when you leave a platform. Expect to rebuild templates. Protect domain ownership, export pages/products/customers, and avoid parking the only admin login with a freelancer. Hosted builders often mean more redesign on exit; WordPress.org stays portable if backups are real.

Is WordPress free?

WordPress.org software is free. You still pay for a domain, hosting (intro vs renewal), themes/plugins, and someone’s time for updates and security. WordPress.com is a different hosted product — this tool focuses on WordPress.org + host.

Should I trust long guides that claim lab testing?

Many global roundups invent or imply lab rankings. ScaleSaathi Editorial does not invent test scores. We publish a decision framework, dated public pricing notes, and clear notes on renewals, GST, and maintenance ownership. Verify every claim at the vendor.

Where do Hostinger and BigRock fit?

Hostinger appears as Website Builder and as a common host for WordPress.org, with one disclosed affiliate link. BigRock is another host you can compare in the Hosting Plan Finder.

Is this a quotation or ranking?

No. It is a free browser shortlist from your answers plus dated listed prices labelled verify at checkout. Not a lab ranking, not legal advice, and not a guarantee of features.
