If you run a salon, a studio or a consultancy and nobody on your team wants to deal with WordPress updates, Wix makes a lot of sense. You design, host and edit the site in one place.
Know three things before you pay. The free plan is only for testing; you need a paid plan to connect your own domain. To take payments, start at Core, not Light. And if you might switch platforms later, choose carefully now, because a Wix site does not move out as easily as WordPress.
Wix: is it the right fit for you?
Good fit
- A salon, studio, consultancy, restaurant or photographer where nobody wants to maintain WordPress.
- You want to launch quickly and edit the site visually, without a developer.
- You need appointments or a light store. Core is the first plan with payments, basic selling and scheduling. Light has 2 GB and no selling.
Think twice
- A content-heavy affiliate site that depends on portability and plugins: self-hosted WordPress fits better.
- A store-first business: compare Shopify.
- Buying a selling plan “just in case”. Upgrade once your selling process is clear.
Before you pay
- The free plan is for testing. Your own domain and removing Wix branding need a paid plan.
- Yearly plans are paid in full and have a 14-day refund window. Build a real mobile page, contact form and service page before it closes.
- Prices and currency vary by location. Screenshot the final checkout total, GST, renewal cycle and any domain voucher conditions, and check which Indian payment providers your account can use.
ScaleSaathi verdict
Excellent for a visual business site when convenience beats portability
Wix is a strong choice for an Indian freelancer or small business that wants to design, host and manage a polished site in one place without maintaining WordPress. The editor, templates and built-in business tools reduce launch friction. The trade-off is platform dependence: hosting and core site operation stay inside Wix, and advanced changes can be less open than a self-hosted WordPress stack.
Service businesses, portfolios, restaurants and appointment-led businesses wanting a no-code launch.
Publishers or developers who prioritise maximum portability, infrastructure choice and deep code-level control.
What to know first
- A free plan is available for building and testing, but a paid plan is needed for a custom-domain professional site.
- Core and higher tiers add payment acceptance and e-commerce functions.
- Paid annual plans show a 14-day refund window and selected first-year domain benefits.
- Prices and currency vary by location; the public page says the final amount appears before payment.

✓ Strengths
- No-code editor, AI builder and large template library
- Hosting, security monitoring and business tools in one service
- Free plan for evaluating the workflow
- Bookings, marketing and commerce available in the ecosystem
— Limitations
- Serious use requires an ongoing platform subscription
- Moving a complete site elsewhere is less direct than moving WordPress
- Apps and higher tiers can raise long-term cost
- Public reference prices may not match the final Indian checkout currency
The reason to choose Wix is speed to a good result
Wix combines an AI-assisted starting flow, drag-and-drop editing, hosting and more than two thousand templates according to its plan page. A local consultant, salon, restaurant or photographer can focus on services and imagery rather than hosting configuration. That convenience is real value when nobody on the team wants to maintain a CMS.
A free site is useful for evaluating the editor, but it is not the finished business setup. Connecting your domain and removing platform branding requires a premium plan. Build a representative mobile page, contact form and service page before the refund window ends.
Plan selection: website or business system?
Light is positioned as the basic website tier. Core is the practical starting point when you need online payments, basic commerce or scheduling. Business increases storage and commercial capability. Do not buy a commerce tier simply because you might sell someday; upgrade when the selling workflow is defined.
The official pricing page warns that prices and currency vary by location and that yearly subscriptions are paid in full. Indian buyers should screenshot or record the final checkout total, included GST treatment, renewal cycle and any domain voucher conditions.
SEO, content and ownership trade-offs
Wix includes marketing and SEO tools, and a capable site can rank when its content answers real searches. Platform choice is not a substitute for original research, internal linking and a useful editorial point of view. For a simple service site, Wix's integrated controls are usually enough.
The larger issue is portability. You control your brand and content, but the assembled site depends on the Wix platform. Self-hosted WordPress offers broader hosting and code freedom; it also places updates, backups and security decisions on you. Choose the responsibility model you can sustain.
What Wix costs, and the conditions on the free domain
Wix’s plans for yearly billing, paid in full, are Light $17, Core $29, Business $39 and Business Elite $159 a month (US-dollar list price on Wix’s global Wix plans page, seen 30 Oct 2026; Indian checkout may show rupees and GST). Use them to judge the gap between tiers, and read the final total on the purchase page before paying.
That gap is the decision. Light ($17, 2 GB storage) has no payment features. Core ($29, 50 GB) is the first tier that accepts payments and adds basic e-commerce and bookings. At those US-dollar list prices, three years of Light is about $612 and three years of Core about $1,044 before tax. I would only pay for Core once you have a service or product ready to sell online.
Three conditions people miss
- The free domain is a voucher. It must be used within 60 days of buying, works only for a new domain bought from Wix, and comes only with your first Premium plan. It does not apply to renewals or upgrades, and you cannot use it for a domain you already own.
- The 14-day refund covers the first upgrade only. Build your real pages in that window, as the checklist above says.
- Email is a separate bill. Wix points you to Google Workspace for an address on your domain, so add that cost per user.
Taking payments in India: Razorpay, and no cash on delivery
For an Indian business on Core or above, the payment provider that matters is Razorpay. Wix’s Razorpay help page lists India as the supported country, INR as the currency and fees from 2% per transaction, set by Razorpay rather than Wix. One detail trips people up: the currency on your Wix site must match the currency on your Razorpay account, or transactions may be declined. Set the site to rupees before you connect.
Cash on delivery is the bigger gap for Indian shops. Wix’s own COD request page for India says it is currently not possible to accept cash or collect on delivery, where payment is taken after the order is fulfilled (seen 30 October 2026). If a large share of your orders would be COD, Wix is the wrong store platform today; a bookings or services business that takes payment upfront is fine.
The downsides people leave Wix over
- You cannot change the template later. Wix’s template help page says a site cannot be switched to a different template once created. A redesign means a new site and copying pages across.
- The site runs only on Wix. The export help page says a Wix site needs to be hosted and operated on Wix’s servers. You can keep the domain with another registrar, but you cannot download the site and host it elsewhere.
- The bill grows with apps. Paid Wix apps and the higher plans add up over three years, on top of the plan price.
- No payments on Light. The cheapest paid plan cannot sell, so most businesses end up on Core.
If you outgrow Wix, the content can move even if the design cannot. WordPress.com’s import guide lists Wix among the platforms its importer brings content over from. Plan to rebuild the design and redirect your old URLs, and keep the domain at a registrar you control so the switch is a DNS change rather than a transfer.
Our India-specific recommendation
Wix is best for an Indian small business that values a polished no-code site, integrated appointments or a light store, and predictable vendor responsibility. Verify which payment methods and providers are available to your exact Indian account before designing the checkout around them.
Choose self-hosted WordPress for a content-heavy affiliate site where portability, plugins and long-run control dominate. Choose Shopify for a store-first operation. Choose Wix when the website must launch quickly and the owner wants to edit it visually without a developer. If you are torn between the two for a store, our Wix vs Shopify comparison for Indian sellers works out the three-year cost, fees and GST.

Frequently asked questions
Is Wix free in India?
Wix has a free build-and-test plan. A professional site with a connected custom domain and removed Wix branding needs a paid plan.
Can Wix accept online payments?
The official plan table lists payment acceptance on Core and higher tiers. Verify available Indian payment providers and transaction conditions in your account before committing.
Is Wix better than WordPress?
Wix is usually easier to operate as one service. Self-hosted WordPress provides more portability and extensibility but needs hosting and maintenance. The better choice depends on who will manage the site.
Can I use Wix for affiliate marketing?
A Wix site can publish affiliate content, subject to programme and platform policies. For a large editorial operation, WordPress may offer a more flexible content and plugin ecosystem.
What are the downsides of Wix?
You cannot switch templates once a site is built, the site can only run on Wix’s servers, apps add to the bill and Light cannot take payments. In India, cash on delivery is not available, per Wix’s COD page.
Can a Wix site in India take Razorpay or cash on delivery?
Razorpay, yes: Wix lists it for India in INR, from 2% per transaction, and your site currency must match your Razorpay account (Wix Razorpay help). Cash on delivery, no, as of 30 October 2026.
Can I move my Wix site to WordPress later?
The content, yes. WordPress.com’s importer lists Wix. The design and Wix apps do not come across, so plan a rebuild and URL redirects.
