The catch is that someone has to handle updates, backups and plugins. A flexible site nobody maintains is worse than a simple one that stays up to date.

Ease is not just the first day
Wix makes the initial build coherent: editor, hosting, templates, security monitoring and support live together. The same owner can update a service, image or opening hour without touching hosting. For a small team, that ongoing simplicity can be more valuable than theoretical flexibility.
WordPress setup is easy with modern hosts, but the system remains assembled from a host, theme and plugins. Somebody should review updates, backups, security notices and performance. If that owner does not exist, the flexible platform can become neglected.
Cost must include time and add-ons
Wix charges a platform subscription, with higher tiers for payments and richer business features. WordPress core has no licence fee, but domain, hosting, premium extensions, backups and professional help can cost money. A low hosting price is not the total cost of a maintained site.
For India, verify taxes, checkout currency and supported payment providers. Estimate three years, including renewals and a realistic maintenance allowance. A platform that saves five hours each month may be cheaper despite a higher invoice.

Read the 48-month figure carefully. ₹6,672 buys four years of Hostinger Premium, so a three-year comparison costs you nothing extra on the WordPress side; the ₹449 renewal only bites in year five. Wix doesn’t publish a rupee price on its global page, so treat $1,044 as the floor and expect GST on an Indian invoice.
WordPress costs much less in cash. Wix charges for time you don’t spend: no plugin updates, no backups to manage, and no broken pages after an update. If nobody on your team will log in monthly to update and test, count an hour or two of a freelancer’s time each month against WordPress, and the gap narrows.
Leaving is the cost nobody prices
A WordPress site moves as files plus a database to any host. A Wix site doesn’t move as a site. You can take your domain and your content, but the design and apps have to be rebuilt elsewhere. WordPress.com’s own import tool lists Wix as a source, which helps with posts and pages but not layouts. If you expect to outgrow your first setup, that one-way door matters more than the first-year price.
Taking payments in India
On Wix, payments start at Core. Light, the cheapest paid plan on the Wix plans page, doesn’t list “Accept payments”. Wix’s own Razorpay connection guide lists India and INR, with transaction fees “from 2% per transaction”, and warns that payments can be declined if your Wix account currency doesn’t match your Razorpay account. Cash on delivery is the bigger catch: Wix’s help centre says COD can’t be added as a payment method in India, which rules Wix out for many first-time D2C sellers.
On WordPress, the usual route is WooCommerce with Razorpay’s official WooCommerce plugin. Razorpay’s WordPress gateway page lists 2% on its standard plan, GST extra. So the gateway fee is roughly the same either way. What differs is control: WooCommerce can take COD, partial COD or any gateway that ships a plugin, and you choose the invoice plugin that prints your GSTIN the way your accountant wants. On Wix, check that the order invoice meets your GST needs before you build the shop.
What you can’t undo on Wix
Three Wix limits decide more long-term cost than the monthly price. First, the design is fixed once you pick it: Wix states that switching a site’s template isn’t possible. You start a new site and copy pages across. Second, the copy has gaps. Wix’s page-copy guide excludes third-party apps, Wix Stores and Bookings pages, datasets and Velo code. Third, the site can’t leave Wix servers. Wix’s export article says the site must be hosted and run on Wix, although your content belongs to you and the domain can be managed elsewhere.
WordPress has none of these one-way doors. You can change the theme on a live site, test it on a staging copy first, and move the files and database to another host. Going from Wix to WordPress, the WordPress.com importer lists Wix as a source and brings content across, but not the design. Budget a rebuild of layouts and a redirect map from old Wix URLs.
SEO, affiliate content and growth
Both systems provide essential search controls. WordPress has the deeper ecosystem for editorial workflows, structured content, affiliate link management and specialised optimisation. Wix can handle a focused business blog and local-service pages without that complexity.
Google does not reward a platform simply for being WordPress or punish a site for being Wix. Original evidence, clear authorship, useful comparisons, page experience and honest commercial disclosure are the durable inputs.
Decision by business type
Choose Wix for a consultant, salon, restaurant, portfolio or appointments business that wants a visual editor and one accountable vendor. Choose WordPress for a publication, affiliate site, membership concept or business expecting specialised integrations and frequent content.
