PF Calculator: EPF Contribution and Retirement Balance

Work out your monthly PF (employee 12%, employer EPF and EPS split, EDLI and admin charges) and project your EPF balance to retirement with salary raises, voluntary PF and EPFO-style yearly interest. Uses the ₹25,000 wage ceiling from 17 September 2026 and the 8.25% rate notified for 2025-26. Free, in your browser, in English or Hindi.

What the PF estimate is based on

  • Your input: PF wages, meaning basic + DA + retaining allowance, not gross pay or CTC.
  • Contributions: 12% from you and 12% from the employer, of which 8.33% goes to EPS (your pension, not your EPF balance). EDLI 0.5% and admin 0.5% are not credited to you.
  • Wage ceiling: ₹25,000 a month from 17 Sep 2026 (S.O. 5109(E)), replacing ₹15,000.
  • Interest: 8.25% for 2025-26. Future rates are not known, so also try a lower rate. Updated 22 October 2026; an estimate, not an EPFO statement.

How it is worked out: each month’s contributions are added to a running balance; interest is worked out on the balance at the start of each month at the yearly rate ÷ 12 and credited once a year on 31 March (and in the month you retire). Contributions are rounded to the rupee as EPFO does. EPS goes to the pension fund, not your EPF balance. This is an estimate, not an EPFO statement.

How to use this PF calculator

  1. Enter your PF wages: basic pay plus dearness allowance (DA) and any retaining allowance. Your salary slip shows these. Do not enter gross pay or CTC; EPFO's FAQ says PF is not worked out on gross salary.
  2. Enter your age, retirement age and today's EPF balance from your EPFO passbook (employee plus employer share).
  3. Set your yearly salary increase. It is applied every April.
  4. Check the interest rate. It starts at 8.25%, the rate notified for 2025-26. Future rates are not known, so try a lower rate too.
  5. Pick the contribution rules: 12% or 10%, PF on wages up to the ceiling or on full wages, whether you are in the pension scheme (EPS), and any voluntary PF.
  6. Read this month's PF split, the growth chart and the year-by-year table. Use Copy share link to save or send your inputs, or Print for a paper copy.

How PF contribution is calculated

You pay 12% of PF wages. Your employer pays another 12%, split two ways: 8.33% of wages up to the ceiling goes to the Employees' Pension Scheme (EPS), and the difference goes to your EPF account. EPFO's contribution-rate sheet says each share is rounded to the nearest rupee and the employer's EPF share is the difference between the employee share and the pension contribution. The employer also pays 0.5% for EDLI (insurance) and 0.5% EPF administration charges; neither reaches your account. A 10% rate applies to certain establishments (fewer than 20 employees, sick companies, establishments whose losses equal or exceed net worth, and jute, beedi, brick, coir and guar gum factories).

EPFO's own illustration for wage months from October 2026 (FAQ, Q13):

Monthly PF wages (basic + DA)Employee EPF 12%Employer to EPS 8.33%Employer to EPFEDLI 0.5%Admin 0.5%
₹10,000₹1,200₹833₹367₹50₹50
₹15,000 (old cap)₹1,800₹1,250₹550₹75₹75
₹20,000₹2,400₹1,666₹734₹100₹100
₹25,000 (new cap)₹3,000₹2,083₹917₹125₹125
₹35,000 (above cap)*₹3,000₹0*₹3,000₹125₹125

* EPFO's note: EPS membership is only for employees whose wages on joining (or on the date the new ceiling started) did not exceed the ceiling. Then the whole 12% employer share goes to EPF. Choose “No” for EPS in the calculator for this case.

The ₹25,000 PF wage ceiling from 17 September 2026

The Labour Ministry notified ₹25,000 a month as the wage ceiling for Chapter III of the Code on Social Security, 2020 (S.O. 5109(E), Gazette of India, 17 September 2026), replacing ₹15,000. EPFO's FAQ explains the effects: more employees are covered, and members earning more than ₹15,000 who contributed only on ₹15,000 now contribute more, with a matching employer share. For September 2026 the month is split: 1 to 16 September uses the ₹15,000 ceiling, 17 to 30 September uses ₹25,000. EPFO's example: an existing member with wages of ₹20,000 contributes 12% of ₹17,333.33 = ₹2,080 for September 2026. The calculator and our salary slip generator both use this split.

EPF interest rate and how interest is credited

The EPF interest rate for 2025-26 is 8.25%. As per the Labour Ministry's official release on PIB dated 2 March 2026, this rate was recommended and approved. The 2024-25 rate was also 8.25%. EPFO's FAQ says compound interest is credited on the monthly running balance at the rate declared for each year.

Worked example (one year): PF wages ₹20,000 from April 2027, nothing in the account before. Each month ₹2,400 (you) + ₹734 (employer EPF) = ₹3,134 is added. Interest is worked out on the balance at the start of each month: 0 in April, ₹3,134 in May, ₹6,268 in June and so on up to ₹34,474 in March. Those balances add up to ₹2,06,844; × 8.25% ÷ 12 = ₹1,422 interest, credited on 31 March. Closing balance: ₹37,608 + ₹1,422 = ₹39,030. Put the same inputs in the calculator with retirement one year away and you get the same figure.

Worked examples to retirement

Case (start April 2027, retire at 58, 8.25%)EPF at 58Your shareEmployer EPFInterest
Age 25, PF wages ₹20,000, 5% raise a year, PF on the ceiling₹71,73,511₹11,67,132₹3,56,772₹56,49,607
Same, plus 5% voluntary PF₹1,04,99,002₹21,27,924₹3,56,772₹80,14,306
Age 30, basic + DA ₹40,000, no raise, ₹3 lakh balance, PF on the ₹25,000 ceiling₹76,12,224₹10,08,000₹3,08,112₹59,96,112
Same, PF on full ₹40,000 (joint option)₹1,20,70,630₹16,12,800₹9,12,912₹92,44,918

These assume the rate stays at 8.25% and the ceiling stays at ₹25,000 every year. Neither is promised. In the first case, wages pass ₹25,000 after a few raises, so PF stays at ₹3,000 a month after that. Interest is the biggest part of the final balance in each case: that is the effect of compounding over three decades.

Voluntary PF (VPF)

You can contribute more than 12%. EPFO's contribution-rate sheet says the employee can pay at a higher rate and the employer is not obliged to match it. Ask your employer's payroll team to start VPF. It goes into the same EPF account and earns the same interest.

EPS pension and EDLI insurance

The 8.33% EPS share builds a pension, not a lump sum, so it is not in your EPF balance. EPS stops at age 58, and EPFO's sheet says the 8.33% is then added to the employer's EPF share. For how the pension is worked out, see EPFO's Employees' Pension Scheme page. EDLI is life insurance cover paid for by the employer at 0.5% of wages up to the ceiling.

Withdrawal and tax basics

  • Full withdrawal: at retirement (58), on permanent disability, or after 2 months of unemployment (EPFO EPF Scheme page). On resignation, the 2-month wait applies; on retirement it does not (EPFO FAQ).
  • Partial withdrawal: the reformed rules allow up to 75% of the eligible PF balance in specified circumstances, keeping 25% as a minimum balance (EPFO wage-ceiling FAQ, Q34).
  • When you change jobs, transfer your PF to the new employer instead of withdrawing it (EPFO FAQ).
  • No TDS on withdrawal if your total service is 5 years (60 months) or more, counting previous and present employers (EPFO FAQ). For other tax questions, check the Income Tax Department's rules.

PF calculator FAQ

How is PF calculated on salary?

PF is worked out on PF wages: basic pay plus dearness allowance plus retaining allowance, not on gross pay or CTC. You pay 12% of PF wages. Your employer also pays 12%: 8.33% goes to the Employees' Pension Scheme (EPS) and the rest (3.67%) to your EPF account. From 17 September 2026 the statutory wage ceiling is ₹25,000 a month, so at PF wages of ₹25,000 or more the usual contribution is ₹3,000 from you, ₹2,083 to EPS and ₹917 to EPF. Certain establishments pay 10% instead of 12%.

What is the PF wage ceiling in 2026?

₹25,000 a month from 17 September 2026, notified by the Labour Ministry in S.O. 5109(E) dated 17 September 2026 for Chapter III of the Code on Social Security, 2020. It was ₹15,000 before that. For September 2026, EPFO's FAQ splits the month: the ₹15,000 ceiling for 1 to 16 September and ₹25,000 from 17 September, in a single return.

What is the EPF interest rate for 2025-26?

8.25% a year. As per the Labour Ministry's official release on PIB dated 2 March 2026, the rate of 8.25% for 2025-26 was recommended and approved. The rate for 2024-25 was also 8.25%. The rate for 2026-27 has not been declared yet, so the calculator lets you change it.

How does EPFO calculate interest on PF?

EPFO's FAQ says compound interest is credited on the monthly running balance at the rate declared for each year. The calculator works out interest each month on the running balance and adds the year's total to your account on 31 March, so interest earns interest from the next year onwards.

What is the employer's PF contribution split?

Out of the employer's 12%, 8.33% of wages up to the ceiling goes to EPS (pension) and the rest to your EPF account. On ₹20,000 that is ₹1,666 to EPS and ₹734 to EPF. The employer also pays 0.5% for EDLI insurance and 0.5% EPF administration charges; these are not credited to your account.

Is EPS part of my PF balance?

No. The 8.33% EPS share goes to the pension fund and pays a monthly pension under the pension scheme, not a lump sum in your EPF passbook. That is why the calculator shows EPS in a separate column. To estimate a pension, use EPFO's own pension calculator.

What if my basic salary is more than ₹25,000?

Most employers pay PF only on wages up to the ceiling, so you pay ₹3,000 a month. EPFO's FAQ says contributions on higher wages continue where they are allowed under the scheme; the old contribution-rate sheet says a joint request from employee and employer is needed (Para 26(6)). Pick “Full wages” in the calculator to see that case. EPS stays on the ceiling either way.

What is VPF and is it matched by the employer?

Voluntary PF (VPF) is an extra amount you choose to contribute above the statutory rate. EPFO's contribution-rate sheet says the employee can pay at a higher rate and the employer is not obliged to pay at that higher rate. VPF goes into your EPF account and earns the same interest. Enter VPF as a percentage of PF wages.

Till what age does my EPF earn interest?

EPFO's FAQ says, at present, all accounts earn interest up to age 58 of the member. EPS contribution also stops at 58. So the calculator projects up to a retirement age of 58 at most.

How much PF can I withdraw?

EPFO's EPF Scheme page says full withdrawal is allowed at retirement at 58, on permanent disability, or after 2 months of unemployment. EPFO's wage-ceiling FAQ says the withdrawal reforms allow up to 75% of the eligible PF balance in specified circumstances, with 25% kept as a minimum balance. Check the current rules on the EPFO portal before you apply.

Is tax deducted when I withdraw PF?

EPFO's FAQ says no tax is deducted at source if your service is 5 years (60 months) or more, and service with previous and present employers is added together. For any other tax question about PF, check the Income Tax Department's rules; this page does not give tax advice.

Does this PF calculator match my salary slip?

Yes. It uses the same rules as our free salary slip generator: 12% (or 10%), the ₹25,000 ceiling from 17 September 2026 with the September day-wise split, EPS at 8.33% of wages up to the ceiling, and rounding to the nearest rupee with the employer EPF share as the difference.

Is my data saved or sent anywhere?

No. Everything is worked out in your browser. Nothing is uploaded and there is no sign-up. A share link carries your inputs inside the link itself, so share it only with people you trust.
