Think of it this way. Perplexity is for looking things up. You ask a question, it answers, and it shows you the websites it took the answer from, so you can check a supplier, a competitor’s price or a new GST notice for yourself. ChatGPT is for getting work done: a reply to an angry customer, a product description, a sales sheet nobody can make sense of. Different jobs, not rivals.
Before you put a card in
- Perplexity Free gives 3 Pro Searches a day and 1 Research query a month, enough to try it on real work.
- Perplexity Pro is US$17 a month billed annually (US$204 a year), charged in US dollars on the website from India: about ₹17,952 a year at an assumed ₹88 to the dollar (estimate). The iPhone app lists Pro in rupees, at ₹1,999 a month or ₹19,900 a year (App Store India, seen 30 October 2026).
- ChatGPT bills in rupees, with UPI on Go (₹399) and Plus (₹1,999 a month, ₹23,988 a year).
- The Airtel free-Pro offer is over: the promo ended January 16, 2026.
- Trials renew at the standard price. Cancel before the date if you are only testing.
- Dollar billing means your card’s foreign-currency fee comes on top; check it before you subscribe.
- Paying for only one? For most shops, ChatGPT paid and Perplexity on the free plan.
Prices seen 29–30 October 2026.
The bill is different too. ChatGPT charges you in rupees. On its website, Perplexity says India users can only pay in US dollars, so it lands on your card as a dollar payment. The exception is Apple: the Perplexity app on App Store India lists Pro at ₹1,999 a month or ₹19,900 a year, billed in rupees through your Apple account (seen 30 October 2026).
Prices seen 29 October 2026: Perplexity’s on its Pro and Max plans page and plan guide, ChatGPT’s rupee prices on OpenAI’s Help Center and the App Store India listing; App Store rupee prices seen 30 October 2026.

My verdict: if you mostly look things up, I’d start with Perplexity Free. You get 3 Pro Searches a day (its deeper searches). Pay for Pro, US$17 a month billed annually, only when you keep running out. If you mostly write, reply to customers or work on files, I’d pay for ChatGPT: Go is ₹399 a month and Plus ₹1,999, both in rupees. Only paying for one? For most shops, make it ChatGPT and keep Perplexity on the free plan.

The short answer
You check suppliers, competitors or rules
Use Perplexity. Ask, then click the websites it shows before you act on the answer. The free 3 Pro Searches a day cover a few checks.
You write all day: replies, listings, proposals
Use ChatGPT. I’d start on Go at ₹399 a month. Plus (₹1,999) adds Projects (keeps a job’s chats and files together), custom GPTs (helpers you set up once with your own instructions) and scheduled tasks (jobs it runs at a time you set).
Your day runs on Excel and Word
Use ChatGPT. OpenAI’s pricing page lists add-ons for Excel, Word and PowerPoint, with more use on Plus.
You only want to pay for one
Pay for ChatGPT, in rupees. Keep Perplexity Free open for quick lookups.
What each plan costs
Perplexity shows its paid plans in US dollars, and the prices on its Pro and Max page are monthly figures billed annually; no monthly-billing price is shown. Perplexity’s plan guide notes that annual billing for Max is only available on Perplexity’s website, so monthly billing exists; Zapier’s comparison reports Pro at US$20 and Max at US$200 a month (as reported, October 2026). Every Perplexity figure here assumes annual billing. ChatGPT lists rupee prices for India, and OpenAI’s billing FAQ says Go and Plus can be paid by UPI. Neither company says on these pages whether GST is included.
| Item | Perplexity (official, US$) | ChatGPT (India list prices) |

| Entry paid plan | Education Pro: US$10 a month, only for students and educators verified through SheerID | Go: ₹399 a month (OpenAI says Go may include ads) |
| Main paid plan | Pro: US$17 a month billed annually (US$204 a year). Deep research, choice of AI models, documents and apps, more usage and memory. Shown with a limited-time offer of US$40 in Computer credits (credits for Perplexity Computer, an agent that works on long tasks for you). | Plus: ₹1,999 a month. Reasoning models, Projects, scheduled tasks, custom GPTs, Codex |
| Top individual plan | Max: US$167 a month billed annually (US$2,004 a year) | Pro: from ₹10,699 a month |

What Perplexity really costs in rupees
Here is where the two stop being comparable on paper. ChatGPT Plus is ₹1,999 a month, so ₹23,988 a year, in your own currency. Perplexity Pro is US$204 for the year. What that becomes in rupees depends on the exchange rate on the day your card is charged and on what your bank adds for a foreign-currency payment.
At an assumed rate of ₹88 to US$1, which is our illustration and not a quoted rate, Perplexity Pro works out to about ₹17,952 a year (estimate), before any bank charges. Change the rate in our calculator to today’s figure. Check your card’s foreign-currency fee before you subscribe; there is no official statement on how GST applies to this purchase, so none is added here.
There is a rupee route if you use an iPhone. The App Store India listing shows Perplexity Pro at ₹1,999 a month and ₹19,900 a year (seen 30 October 2026). That is about ₹1,950 more a year than our ₹17,952 estimate for the website, before your bank’s foreign-currency fee, which on many cards is a few per cent. If your card charges 3.5% on foreign payments, the gap falls to roughly ₹1,300, and you also avoid a dollar charge your accountant has to explain. ChatGPT Plus on the App Store is the same ₹1,999 a month or ₹19,900 a year.

Want your own numbers? Download the cost calculator (Excel). It shows monthly and 12-month cost in US$ and ₹ for the number of people you enter, and the exchange rate is a yellow cell you can change.
Job by job: which one to open
| Job | Open this | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Checking a new supplier or distributor | Perplexity | You want the sources in front of you, not a confident paragraph. |
| Finding the latest GST circular or notification | Perplexity, then the official site | Use it to find the right document. Read the circular itself before you advise a client. |
| Competitor research: prices, offers, reviews | Perplexity | Free covers a few checks a day; Pro if it is part of your weekly routine. |
| Drafting customer replies, listings, emails | ChatGPT | Projects and custom GPTs on Plus let you keep a house style. |
| Explaining or cleaning a spreadsheet | ChatGPT | Its Excel extension is limited on Free and Go, expanded on Plus. |
| A research report to read slowly | Either | Perplexity Pro and ChatGPT Plus both list deep research. |
The pattern is simple. If the answer must be traceable, start in Perplexity. If the output is a piece of writing you will send or a file you will work on, start in ChatGPT. Many owners end up using both, but they only need to pay for one.
What the free plans give you
Perplexity’s plan guide puts numbers on its free plan: practically unlimited basic searches, but only 3 Pro Searches a day and 1 Research query a month, with limited file uploads and no image generation. That is enough to test it properly on a real supplier check. ChatGPT’s pricing page describes Free only as “limited” messages, uploads and deep research, without publishing counts. Use both free plans for a week before paying for either.
Three businesses, three choices
A one-person shop selling online
ChatGPT Go at ₹399 a month for listings and replies, paid by UPI. Perplexity Free for the odd supplier or courier check. Total: ₹4,788 a year.
A three-person agency doing client research and copy
ChatGPT Business (US$20 a seat billed yearly) for the writing, shared under one admin. Add Perplexity Pro for the one person who does market research every day; at the assumed ₹88 rate that is about ₹17,952 a year (estimate). Enterprise Pro, at US$400 a seat a year, makes sense only if you need its admin controls.
A CA or tax consultant
Perplexity to locate notifications, circulars and recent changes quickly, always followed by reading the official document. ChatGPT Plus (₹1,999) to draft client letters and explain workings. Do not paste client financials into a personal plan without first changing the data settings below.
On data: OpenAI’s data controls let you switch off “Improve the model for everyone”, and OpenAI says ChatGPT Business data is not used for training by default. Perplexity says in its Help Center article on the data it collects that it uses search queries to improve its AI, and that you can turn this off with the “AI Data Usage” toggle under Settings. Its plan table lists “Opt-out AI training available” for Pro, Education Pro and Max, and says Enterprise Pro data is never used for training.
Which one gets facts right
Showing a source is not the same as getting it right. In March 2025 the Tow Center at Columbia Journalism Review gave eight AI search tools excerpts from real news articles and asked each one to name the article, publisher and link. Perplexity answered 37% of the queries incorrectly, the best of the group. ChatGPT Search identified 134 of its 200 articles incorrectly and signalled doubt only 15 times. The test is about citing news, not GST rules or supplier checks, and both tools have changed since, but the lesson has held up in my own use: a confident answer with a link under it can still point to the wrong page.
- Open the link before you use the fact. If the cited page does not say what the answer says, treat the answer as wrong.
- Check the date on the source. For rates, notices and offers, an article from last year looks just as convincing as today’s circular.
- Ask for the official source by name. “Link the CBIC notification” gets you closer to the real document than “what is the GST rate on”.
- Use ChatGPT for drafting, not for numbers you have not checked. Paste the figures you verified into the chat and let it write around them.
Mistakes that cost money
- Hunting for the Airtel free Pro offer. Older articles still describe 12 months of free Perplexity Pro for Airtel customers (stated as a ₹17,000 value). Perplexity’s Airtel offer page is clear: “The promo ended January 16, 2026.”
- Paying in dollars without checking your card. Perplexity bills India users in US dollars only on its website (the iPhone app bills in rupees). Before you pay a year up front, check what your card charges on foreign-currency payments.
- Treating a search answer as the source. Perplexity shows where an answer came from. For a GST rate, a supplier’s registration or a court order, open that source and read it. The summary is a pointer, not proof.
- Forgetting the free trial renews. Perplexity’s promotion rules say promotional and trial plans need a card and renew at the standard price.
What we would not pay for
Perplexity Max at US$167 a month billed annually (US$2,004 a year, about ₹1,76,352 at our assumed rate) or ChatGPT Pro from ₹10,699 a month. Both are built for people who live in these tools all day; a small business rarely is one. We would also not start by paying for both Perplexity Pro and ChatGPT Plus. Pay for the tool that does your main job, keep the other on free, and upgrade only when you hit a limit you can name.

Frequently asked questions
Is Perplexity cheaper than ChatGPT in India?
At list prices, yes: Perplexity Pro at US$204 a year (US$17 a month billed annually), about ₹17,952 at an assumed ₹88 to US$1, costs less than ChatGPT Plus at ₹23,988 a year. What you actually pay in rupees depends on the exchange rate, your card’s foreign-currency fee and any GST, which neither company states. ChatGPT Go at ₹399 a month is cheaper than both.
Can I pay for Perplexity Pro in rupees?
Not on the website. Perplexity’s Help Center says users in India cannot use rupees for recurring subscriptions and can only subscribe in US dollars. The iPhone app is the exception: App Store India lists Pro at ₹1,999 a month or ₹19,900 a year, billed in rupees by Apple (seen 30 October 2026). ChatGPT bills Indian users in rupees and accepts UPI for Go and Plus.
Is the Airtel free Perplexity Pro offer still available?
No. Perplexity’s Help Center says of the Airtel offer of 12 months of free Pro: “The promo ended January 16, 2026.” Articles that still describe it are out of date.
What does Perplexity Free include?
According to Perplexity’s Help Center, the free plan gives practically unlimited basic searches, 3 Pro Searches a day and 1 Research query a month, with limited file uploads and no image generation.
Should a small team buy Perplexity Enterprise Pro or ChatGPT Business?
For most teams, ChatGPT Business, at US$20 a seat a month billed yearly with a two-seat minimum, because writing and file work is the daily need. Perplexity Enterprise Pro starts at US$40 a seat a month or US$400 a year, and is worth it only if the whole team does research every day and needs admin controls.
Can I rely on Perplexity for GST rules?
Use it to find the right circular or notification quickly, then read the official document before acting or advising a client. A summary can miss a date, an exception or a later amendment.
Is Perplexity more accurate than ChatGPT?
In the Tow Center’s March 2025 test of eight AI search tools on news citations, Perplexity got 37% of queries wrong and ChatGPT Search got 134 of 200 wrong, so Perplexity did better, but neither was reliable enough to trust without checking. Open the source it cites before you use a figure.
