ChatGPT vs Claude India (2026): Plans, ₹ Price & Privacy

Last updated 30 October 2026. Prices checked 30 October 2026; Claude rupee prices as reported by TechCrunch and Mint, July 2026.

ChatGPT vs Claude comparisons are mostly written for US coders, in dollars, with no word on GST. I set up AI tools for Indian shops, CA practices and small agencies, and they ask three things: which one to pay for, what it costs in rupees, and what can go wrong.

Rupee prices, limits and settings

Pay  ChatGPT Go ₹399 or Plus ₹1,999 a month. Claude Pro ₹2,399 a month, or about ₹2,000 billed yearly, GST included (reported July 2026).

Team  ChatGPT Business ₹1,800 a seat yearly or ₹2,250 monthly, plus GST. Claude Team ₹2,399 yearly or ₹2,999 monthly, GST included. Both start at 2 seats.

  • Paid plans still have limits. Claude counts use in 5-hour sessions plus a weekly cap.
  • ChatGPT trains on personal-plan chats by default; Claude only if you allow it. Change this before you upload a customer list.
  • Claude Pro yearly is ₹19,900 in the iPhone app against ₹24,000 on the website, but an app-store bill is unlikely to carry your GSTIN.
  • UPI works for ChatGPT Go and Plus. Claude takes cards only on its website; UPI works only through the app stores.
  • For coding and fixing websites, Claude Code is the stronger pick; ChatGPT wins on images and price.
  • Most firms need one paid plan. Paying for both costs about ₹4,000 a month.

ChatGPT prices seen 30 October 2026. Claude prices as reported by TechCrunch and Mint, July 2026; app prices seen 30 October 2026.

Our verdict: for most small Indian businesses, start with ChatGPT. Go at ₹399 covers daily replies, Plus at ₹1,999 adds the full Excel and Sheets add-ins, and only ChatGPT makes images. Choose Claude Pro (₹2,399 a month, or about ₹2,000 billed yearly, GST included, as reported in July 2026) if your days go on contracts, tenders, long reports or website code. For a team, ChatGPT Business is cheaper; Claude Team earns its extra cost in document-heavy firms and agencies.

What the free plans include

Free plan ChatGPT Free Claude Free
Text chats Unlimited, subject to abuse guardrails Usage limit that resets in 5-hour sessions (Pro gets more)
Uploads Limited messages with uploads Up to 20 files per chat, 500 MB each, PDFs up to 1,000 pages (XLSX needs code execution and file creation turned on)
Web search Yes Yes
Images Limited image creation Image creation not listed (plan lists Claude Design, Slides and Docs); reads images you upload
Voice Limited voice chats Voice mode: yes
Projects Listed from Plus (with custom GPTs and scheduled tasks) Up to 5 projects
Office / Sheets add-ins Limited Not on Free
Memory Limited memory and context Yes

The free plans are enough to decide. Give both the same real jobs for a week (a quotation, a sheet clean-up, customer replies, a supplier contract) and pay for the one you kept opening.

Usage limits: what happens when you hit the cap

No paid plan is unlimited, and limits, not features, are why most people upgrade. Claude counts use in five-hour sessions plus a weekly cap; at the cap you wait or buy usage credits. Long chats and big PDFs burn it faster. According to Anthropic’s Help Center, a Team standard seat gets 1.25 times Pro’s session allowance and a premium seat 6.25 times, counted per person, so one heavy user cannot starve the team.

ChatGPT publishes no exact numbers; Free users drop to a lighter model after a set number of messages. In my clients’ use, ChatGPT Plus rarely hits a wall in office work, while Claude Pro used for coding or hundred-page files often does by mid-afternoon. The cheap fix: a new chat per task, and paste only the pages you need.

Common small-business jobs: which plan has the feature

Which plan has the feature each job needs, from the official plan pages (ChatGPT, Claude), with the trap I see most.

Job ChatGPT Claude Things to watch
Draft a GST invoice or quotation layout Free and up; Plus creates files Free and up; creates Word, Excel and PDF files AI gets GST rates and HSN codes wrong. Check with our GST invoice format guide and GST calculator.
Excel formulas, cleaning a sales sheet Excel and Sheets add-ins (full on Plus) Microsoft 365 add-in (Pro and up) Test on a copy. See ChatGPT for Excel.
WhatsApp replies to customers Drafts you copy and paste Drafts you copy and paste Neither connects to WhatsApp Business. See our WhatsApp AI chatbot guide.
Read a long contract, tender or bank statement Uploads expanded on Plus PDFs up to 1,000 pages Remove customers’ personal data first.
Hindi or regional-language posts Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, Bengali and more Most Unicode languages Read every reply before sending.
Fix the shop website or write a small script Codex on Plus and Business Claude Code on Pro, Max and Team Work on a copy; never paste server passwords.
Product photos and social images On every plan Not offered Text inside images often has spelling slips.
Voice notes and spoken replies On every plan On every plan Mixed Hinglish is weaker than clean Hindi.

For Tally work, both give general help only (see AI for accountants and CAs); for routine emails, try our free email writer.

Feature names, in plain words:

  • Projects (both): keeps your price list, terms and past chats together.
  • Custom GPTs (ChatGPT Plus and Business): a saved assistant, say one that writes quotations in your format.
  • Canvas (ChatGPT) and Artifacts (Claude): a side panel to edit a letter or web page in place.
  • Memory (both): remembers your GSTIN, city and tone; review it, as it can store wrong facts.
  • Deep research (both, on paid plans): a linked report on a supplier or market from dozens of pages.
  • Connectors (both): reads Google Drive, Gmail or Microsoft 365 directly.

Writing, accuracy and long documents

For contracts, tender replies and anything that must sound careful, I hand clients Claude: it follows instructions closely and pads less. ChatGPT is quicker for captions, WhatsApp replies and product descriptions, and adds images in the same chat.

Claude also reads more at once: Pro and Team hold about 200,000 tokens, roughly 1.5 lakh words, in one conversation, according to Anthropic’s Team plan page, enough for a full tender with annexures. ChatGPT publishes no figure.

Both still get facts wrong. The errors I catch most: an old GST rate, a made-up HSN code, last year’s due date and a clause summary that drops a condition. Ask for the page number it relies on, and check rates and dates with your CA.

File uploads, Excel and Office

ChatGPT lists Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Google Sheets extensions on every plan: limited on Free and Go, full on Plus. Uploads rise from “limited” on Free to “expanded” on Plus; its pricing page gives no numbers.

Claude publishes exact upload limits: 20 files per chat, 500 MB each, PDFs up to 1,000 pages (charts read in the first 100). XLSX needs code execution turned on. Claude for Microsoft 365 and Outlook starts at Pro. If your office runs on Google Sheets, ChatGPT fits better; if it runs on Excel and Outlook, Claude does.

Hindi and regional languages

OpenAI’s help centre lists the languages ChatGPT supports, including Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu. Change the app language under Settings → General → Language.

Anthropic says Claude handles most Unicode languages. In its own tests (developer documentation), Claude scored 96.7% of its English score in Hindi and 95.4% in Bengali (Sonnet 4.5, extended thinking). For best results, write in the native script, not Hinglish.

Data privacy settings to change first

ChatGPT Claude
Personal plans Free, Go, Plus, Pro: chats can be used for training by default Free, Pro, Max: used only if you allow it, or if a chat is flagged for safety review
How to opt out Settings → Data controls → turn off “Improve the model for everyone” (voice has a separate switch) Privacy settings → turn off the model improvement option
Private chat mode Temporary chat: not in history, not used for training, kept up to 30 days for safety Incognito chat: not used for training even if model improvement is on
Feedback — Thumbs up/down stores the whole conversation for up to 5 years
Team plans Business: not trained on by default; encrypted in transit and at rest Team: no model training on your content by default

Where your data is stored and the DPDP Act

Personal-plan chats on both are stored outside India, mostly in the US. OpenAI offers storage in India for ChatGPT Enterprise and Edu, and is rolling out a storage region choice for Business, though a US copy is kept for abuse checks. Anthropic lists no India storage option for Team.

India’s Digital Personal Data Protection Rules take effect in phases from November 2026; you stay responsible for your customers’ data. My rules for clients: strip phone, Aadhaar and PAN numbers and bank details before pasting; replace names with “Customer A”; and put staff on a team plan, where chats are not trained on and an admin can cut a leaver’s access the same day.

Team plans: minimums and admin control

  • ChatGPT Business: at least 2 paid seats, up to 200 on self-serve. Standard seat ₹1,800 a month billed yearly or ₹2,250 monthly, plus GST (seen October 2026). Includes custom GPTs, deep research, Codex and admin controls.
  • Claude Team: 2 to 150 people, according to Anthropic’s Help Center; Fortune India reported 5 seats in July 2026. Standard seat ₹2,399 billed yearly or ₹2,999 monthly; premium ₹11,999 or ₹14,999, GST included, as reported by Mint. ANI’s July report did not name the billing period and Business Today called ₹2,399 a monthly price (both as summarised by S3Techpulse, October 2026), so check your checkout. Includes Claude Code, connectors and single sign-on.
  • Bigger teams: Claude’s self-serve Enterprise is US$20 a seat a month, billed yearly, plus API-rate usage, from 20 seats. ChatGPT Enterprise is sold through sales.
  • Two people only? Two ChatGPT Go plans cost ₹798 a month against ₹3,600 plus GST for two Business seats billed yearly. But chats leave with each person.

Worked example: a 5-person firm

A 5-person CA practice or agency, at list prices:

ChatGPT Business, yearly Claude Team, yearly
Per seat per month ₹1,800 + 18% GST = ₹2,124 ₹2,399, GST included
5 seats for a year ₹1,08,000 + ₹19,440 GST = ₹1,27,440 ₹1,43,940
If you can claim GST input credit About ₹1,08,000 net About ₹1,22,000 net, if the invoice supports it
Same 5 seats paid monthly ₹1,35,000 + GST = ₹1,59,300 ₹1,79,940

ChatGPT Business saves about ₹16,500 a year on paper. Claude Team earns that back only if your staff live in long documents or code. A common middle path: 4 ChatGPT Business seats plus one Claude Pro for the partner who drafts contracts.

Paying from India: GST, currency and invoices

  • Currency and UPI: OpenAI bills Indian buyers in rupees, with UPI for Go and Plus; Business is card only. Claude has shown rupee prices since July 2026 (TechCrunch), but its website takes cards only; for UPI, subscribe in the Android or iPhone app (Xflow’s payment guide, October 2026).
  • Recurring card charges: under RBI’s e-mandate rules, you approve the first charge with an OTP, your bank warns you 24 hours before each renewal, and renewals up to ₹15,000 need no OTP. Above that, such as Max 20x or a yearly Team bill, every renewal needs one; miss it and the account locks.
  • App Store versus website: Claude Pro Annual was ₹19,900 in the India App Store on 30 October 2026 against ₹24,000 on the website; monthly Pro is ₹1,999 against ₹2,399. Max costs more in the app. The catch: Apple or Google bills you, and their invoices are unlikely to carry your GSTIN, so ask your CA first. You also cancel through the store.
  • GST invoice and input credit: Claude’s rupee prices include GST (Mint and Free Press Journal); ChatGPT Business adds it at checkout. Add your GSTIN in billing settings before the first payment, since changes apply only to later invoices.
  • Avoid “cheap shared accounts” sold on Telegram or marketplaces. The seller can read your chats.

Costs and catches to watch

  • Go may show ads, OpenAI says.
  • Yearly plans lock you in. ₹24,000 for Claude Pro up front is a bad bet before a month on the monthly plan.

Who should pick which

Shop owner on a tight budget

ChatGPT Free, then Go at ₹399 a month, payable by UPI. Claude has no plan at this price.

Excel or Google Sheets every day

ChatGPT Plus for the full Excel and Sheets add-ins, or Claude Pro if you work in Microsoft 365.

Contracts, tenders and long reports

Claude Pro. It reads 1,000-page PDFs and holds about 1.5 lakh words in one chat.

Social posts with images

ChatGPT. Image creation is on every ChatGPT plan; Claude does not make images.

Team of 3 to 20

ChatGPT Business or Claude Team, not personal plans.

Accountant or CA firm

A team plan for the privacy terms; Claude Team if partners review long documents. Read our guide for accountants first.

Developer or agency building websites/apps

Claude Pro or a Team premium seat for Claude Code, which edits project files and runs commands for you. If budget is tight, ChatGPT Plus includes Codex.

Should you pay for both?

Only if one job truly needs each: for example, Claude Pro for contracts or code plus ChatGPT Go at ₹399 for images and quick replies, about ₹2,800 a month. Plus and Pro together (₹4,000–4,400) rarely pay off.

Frequently asked questions

Is ChatGPT or Claude better for a small business in India?

For most shops and small offices, ChatGPT: it costs less (Go is ₹399 a month), it makes images, and its Excel and Google Sheets add-ins cover daily office work. Claude is better when the job is reading or writing long documents, careful business writing, or fixing a website with Claude Code. Try both free plans on your own work for a week first.

Which is cheaper in India, ChatGPT or Claude?

ChatGPT. ChatGPT Go is ₹399 a month and Plus ₹1,999 (OpenAI, seen 30 October 2026). Claude has nothing below Pro at ₹2,399 a month, or ₹24,000 a year, GST included, as reported by TechCrunch in July 2026. For teams, ChatGPT Business at ₹1,800 a seat yearly plus GST also works out cheaper than Claude Team at ₹2,399.

Is GST charged on ChatGPT and Claude subscriptions?

Yes, on both, but shown differently. Claude’s India prices include GST, as reported by Mint and Free Press Journal in July 2026. ChatGPT’s personal plans are shown as a single rupee price, while ChatGPT Business is shown before GST, which is added at checkout. For input tax credit, buy on the website, add your GSTIN in billing settings and check the first invoice with your accountant.

Do ChatGPT and Claude train on my business data?

On personal ChatGPT plans (Free, Go, Plus, Pro) chats can be used to train models by default; turn off Settings → Data controls → “Improve the model for everyone”. On personal Claude plans (Free, Pro, Max) chats are used only if you allow it in the privacy settings, or if a chat is flagged for safety review. ChatGPT Business and Claude Team are not trained on your data by default.

What is the minimum team size for ChatGPT Business and Claude Team?

Both need at least 2 paid seats. ChatGPT Business allows up to 200 seats on self-serve; Anthropic’s Help Center says Claude Team needs at least two members and supports up to 150. One July 2026 report said 5 seats for Claude in India; Anthropic’s page says 2.

Can ChatGPT or Claude reply in Hindi and other Indian languages?

Yes. OpenAI lists Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu among ChatGPT’s supported languages. Anthropic publishes Hindi and Bengali scores close to Claude’s English score. Always read a regional-language reply before you send it to a customer.

Is Claude better than ChatGPT for coding?

For most website and app work, yes. Claude Code comes with Claude Pro, Max and Team and works directly on your project files. ChatGPT includes Codex on Plus and Business, which is enough if you already pay for ChatGPT. Heavy coding uses up Claude Pro’s limits fast.

Is Claude Pro cheaper on the App Store in India?

For the yearly plan, yes. The Claude App Store listing for India showed Pro Annual at ₹19,900 on 30 October 2026, against ₹24,000 a year on the website as reported in July 2026. Monthly Pro is ₹1,999 in the app against ₹2,399 on the web. An Apple bill is unlikely to carry your GSTIN, so check the input-credit position with your accountant first.

Can I pay for Claude with UPI?

Not on Claude’s website, which takes cards only (TechCrunch, July 2026; still so in October 2026 reports). Subscribe inside the Claude app and Google Play or the App Store lets you pay by UPI. ChatGPT takes UPI for Go and Plus.
