Tally vs Busy for Indian Small Businesses (2026)

Last updated 30 October 2026 · Prices seen 30 October 2026 on Tally’s price page and BUSY’s pricing page. All prices are before 18% GST unless marked “with GST”.

Picture a trader in a wholesale market who asks his accountant to choose between Tally and Busy. He does not really want to know which one has more features. He wants to know which one will still be making his bills correctly three years from now, without surprise costs. That is the right question. Both programs prepare GST invoices, keep stock and produce a balance sheet. They differ in their renewal costs, how much stock detail you get at each price, what an extra user costs and how easily your CA can work with your data.

Renewals and traps, accountant’s note

  • “Lifetime” Tally Silver (₹22,500) is not a one-time cost: updates and GST connectivity need TSS, ₹4,500 a year.
  • BUSY’s BLS runs on 360-day terms, not calendar years, so note the real expiry date.
  • When BLS lapses, BUSY Magic goes into Demo Mode. BUSY 21 keeps working, but do not install releases issued after your BLS expiry.
  • GST-registered? Skip BUSY Basic. It is meant for non-GST businesses.
  • BUSY’s listed prices are single-user. Get a written multi-user quote before comparing it with Tally Gold (₹67,500, or ₹24,300 rental).
  • Remote access: Tally on Cloud Access is ₹8,496 a year with GST but covers hosting only, licence extra; BUSY Online is ₹12,744 a year with GST.
  • If you switch, switch on 1 April.

Prices seen 30 October 2026.

This page compares TallyPrime (Silver and Gold, lifetime or rental) with BUSY (BUSY 21 Basic, Standard and Enterprise, plus the newer BUSY Magic plans) plan by plan, in rupees, from each company’s own price list. If you only need TallyPrime’s prices, our TallyPrime price guide goes deeper. For BUSY’s editions on their own, read our BUSY accounting software review.

Our verdict: for a single-user trader or distributor who keeps a lot of stock, BUSY 21 Standard is the better buy. Over three years it costs ₹34,810 with GST, against ₹37,170 for TallyPrime Silver lifetime, and its plan card lists batch and expiry tracking, BOM and job-work features. Choose TallyPrime when your CA’s office, your staff or your local partner already work in Tally, or when three or four people must enter data at the same time and you want a published price for that (Gold). If you need to work from home, Tally’s Cloud Access is cheaper per user than BUSY Online (₹8,496 against ₹12,744 a year with GST), though it is hosting only and the TallyPrime licence is extra.

Start with the bills you make every day

Before comparing prices, take out last month’s busiest day of bills and look at three things. First, how many lines does a typical bill have, and do you sell the same item in different sizes, batches or units? Second, who types the bills: you, one billing clerk, or two people at once on different computers? Third, where is your CA? Do they visit, collect a backup on a pen drive, or log in remotely?

Those three answers matter more than any feature list. A medicine distributor with batch and expiry dates on every line needs a different setup from a hardware shop with 300 fast-moving items. A business where the owner wants to check outstanding payments from home at night needs a remote-access plan, and both companies charge extra for that.

What each plan costs, before and after GST

Neither company includes GST in the headline price. Tally prints “+18% GST” under each plan. BUSY’s pricing page says “GST to be added to the price”, and its FAQ repeats that its figures exclude GST. If you are GST-registered and buy in your business name with your GSTIN, you can usually claim this GST as input tax credit. A shop under the composition scheme cannot, so for that shop the with-GST figure is the real cost.

Tally’s own FAQ says every plan has the full feature set. Silver and Gold differ only in how many people can work at once. The rental discounts (5% for three months, 10% for twelve) are offers shown on the page today; do not assume the same discount next year.

BUSY

Plan Price before GST With 18% GST Renewal (BLS) per 360 days
BUSY 21 Basic (non-GST billing) ₹11,000 ₹12,980 ₹4,000

BUSY Magic Power+ (10 users, 150 companies) ₹50,000 / 360 days ₹59,000 Subscription
Source: BUSY’s pricing page, single-user prices shown on the page, checked 28 Oct 2026. BUSY 21 licences include one mobile app free for the first year.

Watch the word “360 days”. BUSY bills its renewals and Magic subscriptions every 360 days, not every calendar year. Over three years that adds up to roughly two extra weeks, so your renewal date moves a little earlier each year. Put the actual expiry date in your phone, not “every April”.

There is also a real difference between the two BUSY families. If a BUSY 21 licence’s BLS lapses, BUSY says the software keeps working with your existing data, but updates, support and connected GST functions stop. BUSY also warns not to install releases issued after your BLS expiry, because an unsupported version may run in Demo Mode. If a BUSY Magic subscription lapses, the software switches to Demo Mode. Magic is cheaper to start, but you have to keep paying every 360 days to keep using it normally.

1-year and 3-year cost

Most people compare only the first bill. Over three years the picture changes, because Tally’s TSS and BUSY’s BLS keep coming every year, and remote access is charged per user.

Option (single user unless stated) Year 1, before GST Year 1, with GST 3 years, before GST 3 years, with GST
BUSY 21 Basic ₹11,000 ₹12,980 ₹19,000 ₹22,420
BUSY Magic Smart ₹8,000 ₹9,440 ₹24,000 ₹28,320
TallyPrime Silver, 12-month rental ₹8,100 ₹9,558 ₹24,300 ₹28,674
BUSY 21 Standard ₹16,500 ₹19,470 ₹29,500 ₹34,810
TallyPrime Silver, lifetime ₹22,500 ₹26,550 ₹31,500 ₹37,170
BUSY 21 Enterprise ₹22,000 ₹25,960 ₹37,000 ₹43,660
TallyPrime Silver lifetime + Cloud Access (1 user) ₹29,700 ₹35,046 ₹53,100 ₹62,658
BUSY 21 Standard + BUSY Online + mobile app ₹27,300 ₹32,214 ₹69,100 ₹81,538
TallyPrime Gold, 12-month rental ₹24,300 ₹28,674 ₹72,900 ₹86,022
TallyPrime Gold, lifetime ₹67,500 ₹79,650 ₹94,500 ₹1,11,510
3 years = year-1 price + two yearly renewals at today’s TSS/BLS price (+ three years of remote access where named). Tally Silver lifetime with a 2-year TSS renewal comes to ₹30,600 before GST. Calculations are ours, from official prices checked 28 Oct 2026.
Bar chart of the 3-year cost with 18% GST: BUSY 21 Basic ₹22,420, BUSY Magic Smart ₹28,320, Tally Silver rental ₹28,674, BUSY 21 Standard ₹34,810, Tally Silver lifetime ₹37,170, BUSY 21 Enterprise ₹43,660, Tally Silver with Cloud Access ₹62,658, BUSY Standard with Online and app ₹81,538, Tally Gold rental ₹86,022, Tally Gold lifetime ₹1,11,510.
3-year cost with 18% GST, from official prices checked 28 Oct 2026. TallyPrime and BUSY logos are trademarks of their owners.

Three things stand out. First, for one user doing full GST work, BUSY 21 Standard is about ₹2,400 cheaper than Tally Silver lifetime over three years, with GST. Second, the cheapest ways to get started (Tally Silver rental and BUSY Magic Smart) cost almost the same over three years, so choose between them on fit, not price. Third, once you add remote access the order changes. Tally’s Cloud Access (₹7,200 per user a year, ₹8,496 with GST) costs less than BUSY Online (₹10,800, ₹12,744 with GST). Remember that Cloud Access is hosting only; the TallyPrime licence is a separate purchase, which is why the Silver + Cloud Access row includes the lifetime licence. One more detail on BUSY timing: BLS and Magic run on 360-day terms, so three payments cover 1,080 days, and the fourth BUSY payment falls about 15 days before three calendar years are up. The three-year totals here count three terms; it does not change the order.

What the table does not show is the cost of extra users on BUSY. BUSY’s pricing page shows single-user prices; and the BLS prices in BUSY’s FAQ are described as single-user. If two people will bill at the same time, ask your BUSY partner for a written multi-user quote that includes the BLS renewal, and only then compare it with Tally Gold.

GST returns, e-invoice and e-way bill

This is where most comparisons on the first page of Google stop at “both are GST-ready”. That tells you little, because the useful GST features in both depend on paying the renewal.

In TallyPrime, Tally’s TSS page lists uploading GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B data and filing GSTR-1 from inside TallyPrime, auto-reconciling GSTR-2A, 2B, 3B and 1 across periods and GSTINs, and checking a party’s GSTIN and return status. Every plan, Silver or Gold, lists e-invoicing and e-way bills. These “connected” features need active TSS, which is why a lifetime licence still costs money every year if you want them.

In BUSY 21 Standard, the plan card lists GST returns in JSON, direct upload of GSTR-1/IFF, auto e-invoice and e-way bill generation, auto download and reconciliation of GSTR-1, 3B, 2A and 2B, and party return status. Several of these carry an asterisk, and BUSY’s FAQ says connected GST functions stop when BLS expires. BUSY 21 Basic is sold for non-GST businesses, so do not buy it to save ₹5,500 if you are registered. In BUSY Magic, Smart allows up to 10,000 e-way bills and e-invoices, Power 20,000 and Power+ 50,000. Count how many you generated last year before you choose.

In practice, compare the work at month-end, not the menu. Ask each partner to show you the GSTR-2B mismatch screen using a sample of your own purchase bills. Whichever one makes it quicker for your CA to see which supplier has not filed is the one that saves you money on the input tax credit you would otherwise chase late.

Stock, batches and manufacturing

Both handle the basics: multiple godowns, stock summary, reorder levels. The differences show up in detail and at which price you get it.

  • TallyPrime (all plans) lists godown management, batches with manufacturing and expiry dates, multiple bills of material (BOM) per finished product, recording manufacturing from raw material to dispatch, and job work as principal or job worker (Tally inventory page).
  • BUSY 21 Standard lists multiple units per item, batch-wise inventory with manufacturing and expiry dates, BOM and production planning, a production variance report, and bill-by-bill outstanding. Basic already has multiple godowns.
  • BUSY Magic Smart lists MRP-wise stock, brand/size/colour item tracking, warehouses, batch and serial numbers, barcode and QR scanning and POS billing. Production and job work are listed as “upcoming” under Power, so a small manufacturer should not choose Magic today on the strength of those.

Example business, for illustration: a garment wholesaler sells one shirt design in five sizes and four colours. In BUSY Magic Smart that is one item with size and colour parameters. Ask both partners to show you, with your own price list, how that item is set up, how a 20-line bill is typed and how stock by size is reported. Thirty minutes spent on that demo will tell you more than any comparison chart.

More than one person entering data

Tally makes this simple to price: Silver is one user on one PC; Gold is for multi-user access on multiple PCs. There is no published price per extra user; Gold covers the office. Our Tally vs Zoho Books comparison explains the network rules if you are unsure whether Gold fits.

BUSY’s plan cards say Standard “supports unlimited simultaneous users in same office” and Enterprise supports them “in multiple offices”, but the prices on the page are single-user only. Magic Smart, Power and Power+ “allow additional users”, and Power+ lists 10 users. Enterprise adds multi-branch management with offline/online modes and automatic head-office/branch data merging, plus multiple GSTINs in one company. If you have a branch in another city, this is BUSY’s clearest advantage. Tally describes Gold as “multi-user access on multiple PCs” and offers remote access through Tally.NET and Cloud Access, but its buy page does not list an equivalent branch-management feature.

Whichever you buy, set user rights on day one. BUSY lists user-definable access rights, and Smart also lists login scheduling, binding users to selected computers and an audit trail. A frequent cause of trouble in small offices is not the software at all but one shared “admin” login that everyone uses, so nobody can tell who deleted a voucher.

Audit trail (edit log) if you are a company

If your business is a company registered under the Companies Act, this matters more than any feature list. Since 1 April 2023, companies that keep books in software must use one with an audit trail that logs every change with its date, and the log must not be switched off. Tally’s note on the MCA rule sets out the requirement, and your statutory auditor has to report on it.

  • TallyPrime comes in two builds. In the regular build the edit log is off by default and can be switched on or off; Tally’s download page says so (seen 30 October 2026). Only the separate TallyPrime Edit Log build, where the log cannot be disabled, meets the rule, as TallyHelp’s edit log guide states. Install that build on every company machine.
  • BUSY lists “Audit trail” under data security on the Magic plan cards on BUSY’s pricing page (seen 30 October 2026). The page does not say whether it can be turned off, so ask the dealer for that in writing and show it to your auditor.

Proprietors and partnership firms are not covered by the MCA rule, but turning the log on is still the cheapest protection against a staff member quietly altering a bill.

Working from home: BUSY Online vs Tally on cloud

Both software are, at heart, desktop programs. If the owner wants to work from home or a second shop, there are three routes, and you should match the route to the task.

TallyPrime BUSY
Paid hosted access TallyPrime Cloud Access: ₹1,800 per user for 3 months; “plans start as low as 600 INR per user, per month”, +18% GST (₹108) shown on the Cloud Access page. Price is for cloud hosting only; a TallyPrime licence is bought separately. Runs on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure; browser or client app BUSY Online: ₹10,800 per user per year or ₹3,375 per quarter; one company included, ₹7,200 a year for each extra company (₹2,250 a quarter). SQL version ₹16,800 a year
GST on the add-on Not printed next to the add-on price on the buy page; budget for 18% “Prices are exclusive of GST”
Mobile / view-only Online reports in a browser and remote access via Tally.NET, with active TSS Mobile app: ₹3,600 per device a year (1–4 devices) or ₹2,700 (5+), after the free first year
Sources: Tally’s buy page, cloud access page and TSS page; BUSY’s BUSY Online, mobile app and pricing pages. Checked 28 Oct 2026.

Our advice is simple. If the owner only wants to see sales, receivables and stock at night, a mobile app or browser reports are enough; do not pay for full hosted access. If a bookkeeper works from home every day, paid hosting is worth it, and per user Tally’s Cloud Access is the cheaper of the two on published prices. The Tally on cloud guide explains how Tally’s own Cloud Access differs from third-party “Tally on cloud” hosts and what to ask before paying.

Trying both before you pay

Enter one real month of your own bills in each before you buy. Sample data never shows you the screens you will use fifty times a day.

  • BUSY: BUSY’s pricing page offers a 15-day free trial and a free Express edition for basic billing and accounting, with no mobile app (seen 30 October 2026). Express is enough for a non-GST trader to start; you can move up later.
  • TallyPrime: Tally’s download page offers a free trial download. Tally does not print the trial length there; Techjockey’s comparison reports 7 days for Tally against 15 for BUSY (seen 30 October 2026).

In the trial, test the three things that cause the most month-end trouble: your invoice format with your GSTIN and bank details, the GSTR-1 export your CA wants, and a stock report by batch or godown if you hold stock.

Mistakes owners make when choosing

  1. Buying a lifetime licence and assuming it is “one-time”. A lifetime licence keeps the software running, but GST connectivity and updates need TSS or BLS every year. When the GST portal changes a format, an un-renewed copy is the one you cannot update before the filing date.
  2. Choosing BUSY 21 Basic to save money while GST-registered. BUSY positions Basic for non-GST businesses. You would pay twice when you upgrade.
  3. Ignoring your CA. If your CA’s office works in one of them, ask before you buy. Sharing a backup or a data export they can open directly saves fees at audit time.
  4. Paying for Gold or Enterprise “for the future”. Tally Gold is three times the price of Silver. Start with Silver if one person bills; Tally’s FAQ says you can upgrade later.
  5. Counting only the licence. Remote access, mobile devices and a second company on BUSY Online are each charged separately. Ask for one written quote that lists every yearly charge.
  6. Switching software in the middle of the year. Mid-year moves split one year’s GST data across two systems. Plan the switch for 1 April where you can.

Choose Tally or Busy by business type

Retail shop, one counter

Start with BUSY Magic Smart (₹9,440 a year with GST) if you want barcode, POS billing and size/colour items, or Tally Silver rental if your CA works in Tally. Over three years both cost about the same.

Trader or distributor, one billing PC

BUSY 21 Standard. It costs less than Tally Silver lifetime over three years, includes batch/expiry and bill-by-bill outstanding, and keeps working if you skip a renewal, as long as you do not install releases issued after your BLS expiry.

Pharma or FMCG distributor with batches

Either works; both list batch with manufacturing and expiry dates. Ask for a demo of your expiry report. Choose BUSY 21 Standard on price, or Tally if your staff already know it.

Small manufacturer or job worker

TallyPrime or BUSY 21 Standard, not BUSY Magic. Magic lists production and job work as upcoming; Tally and BUSY 21 list BOM and production today.

3–5 people billing in one office

TallyPrime Gold has a published price (₹24,300 a year rental or ₹67,500 lifetime). Get a written BUSY multi-user quote and compare the three-year totals.

Branches in more than one city

BUSY 21 Enterprise for its branch management and multiple GSTINs in one company. With Tally, plan for Cloud Access per user instead.

CA firm or CA-led bookkeeping

TallyPrime. Tally also sells an Auditor edition of TSS (₹6,750 a year), and if your CA already works in Tally, sharing data is simplest.

Switching between them

BUSY’s pricing FAQ says you can move data from other accounting software such as Tally or Marg into BUSY Magic, and that BUSY 21 data works in BUSY Magic. Moving the other way is usually done by your Tally partner with masters and opening balances. Either way, follow the same order:

  1. Pick a clean cut-off date, ideally 1 April, so one financial year’s GST stays in one system.
  2. Move masters first (ledgers with GSTIN, stock items with HSN and units, godowns), then closing balances as opening balances.
  3. Tally outstanding bills party by party and stock item by item before the old system goes read-only.
  4. Run both systems in parallel for the first two to four weeks and compare GSTR-1 totals.
  5. Keep the old software and data readable for at least as long as you may get GST or income tax queries. Do not uninstall it to “clean up”.

Do not move every old voucher. Old years are for reference, and bringing them into a new system usually creates more mismatches than it solves.

Download the cost calculator

The workbook lists ten Tally and BUSY options with year-1 price, renewal, remote access and mobile charges in editable yellow cells. It adds GST (18%, editable) and shows the year-1 and three-year totals. Type in the quote your partner gives you, especially for BUSY multi-user, and the totals update.

Our verdict

Choose BUSY if you are a single-user trader, distributor or stockist who wants detailed stock (batches, units, sizes) at the lowest three-year cost. BUSY 21 Standard is the plan to start with. Choose Enterprise for branches in different cities.

Choose TallyPrime if your CA, staff or partner already work in Tally, if several people bill on multiple PCs and you want a published Gold price, or if you need daily remote work, where Cloud Access (hosting only, ₹8,496 a user a year with GST) costs less than BUSY Online (₹12,744).

For a light retail counter, the cheapest options (Tally Silver rental and BUSY Magic Smart) cost about the same over three years. Pick the one whose billing screen your staff find easier after a demo.

Frequently asked questions

Which is better for a small business, Tally or Busy?

Neither wins for every business. On the official prices checked on 28 October 2026, BUSY 21 Standard (₹16,500 plus GST, then ₹6,500 a year) costs less over three years than a TallyPrime Silver lifetime licence (₹22,500 plus GST, then ₹4,500 a year for TSS), and its plan card lists batch, expiry, BOM and production features. TallyPrime is the safer choice when your CA, staff or partner already work in Tally, or when you need several users in one office at a published price (Gold, ₹67,500 lifetime or ₹24,300 a year).

Do Tally and Busy prices include GST?

No. Tally’s buy page shows “+18% GST” under every price. BUSY’s pricing page says GST is to be added, and its FAQ gives prices excluding GST. For example, BUSY 21 Standard is ₹19,470 and TallyPrime Silver lifetime is ₹26,550 once 18% GST is added.

What is the yearly renewal cost of Tally and Busy?

For TallyPrime, the TSS renewal is ₹4,500 a year for Silver and ₹13,500 a year for Gold, plus GST, with 10% off if you renew for two years. For BUSY 21, the 360-day BLS renewal for a single user is ₹4,000 for Basic, ₹6,500 for Standard and ₹7,500 for Enterprise, plus GST. BUSY says a BUSY 21 licence keeps working if BLS lapses, but updates, support and connected GST services stop, and BUSY warns that releases issued after your BLS expiry may run in Demo Mode, so do not install them; Tally’s TSS likewise covers upgrades and connected GST services.

Can I use Tally or Busy from home or on my phone?

Yes, with add-ons. TallyPrime Cloud Access is ₹1,800 per user for three months (Tally quotes plans from ₹600 per user per month, +18% GST of ₹108, so ₹708 with GST). It is cloud hosting only; you buy the TallyPrime licence separately. BUSY Online is ₹10,800 per user per year or ₹3,375 per quarter, plus GST. BUSY 21 includes one mobile app free for the first year, then ₹3,600 per device a year plus GST.

Can I move my data from Tally to Busy?

BUSY says data from other accounting software such as Tally or Marg can be moved to BUSY Magic. Do it at the start of a financial year if you can: carry over masters and opening balances, keep your old Tally data readable for audits and past GST notices, and run both systems side by side for a few weeks before you stop entering bills in Tally.

Is Busy cheaper than Tally?

For one user, yes. Over three years with 18% GST, BUSY 21 Standard costs ₹34,810 and TallyPrime Silver lifetime costs ₹37,170. BUSY Magic Smart costs ₹28,320 over three 360-day terms (a fourth payment falls about 15 days before three calendar years end). For several users in one office, compare TallyPrime Gold’s published price with a written BUSY multi-user quote, because BUSY does not publish multi-user prices on its pricing page.

Do Tally and BUSY meet the MCA audit trail rule?

For Tally, only the TallyPrime Edit Log build does, because its log cannot be disabled; the regular TallyPrime build lets you switch the log off, per TallyHelp. BUSY lists an audit trail on its Magic plans on its pricing page (seen 30 October 2026); ask BUSY in writing whether it can be disabled before your auditor signs off.

Is there a free version of BUSY or Tally?

BUSY has a free Express edition for basic billing and accounting and a 15-day trial of the paid plans, per BUSY’s pricing page (seen 30 October 2026). TallyPrime offers a free trial download on Tally’s download page, but no free edition for business use.
