Cloudways is not shared hosting with a nicer dashboard. You’re renting a cloud server, from $11 a month on DigitalOcean, and Cloudways runs most of the server stack for you. For Indian traffic, the Bangalore location is the real draw.
The catch is the bill. It’s in US dollars, offsite backups are metered at $0.033 per GB, and the domain and email are separate purchases. I’d move a site here once it has traffic or revenue worth protecting, and use the free, no-card trial to set up a real copy, not a blank test.

It costs more and expects more technical confidence than entry shared hosting, so it is an upgrade path—not the default for every new blog.

What Cloudways is—and is not
Cloudways is a management layer over infrastructure from providers such as DigitalOcean, Vultr, Linode, AWS and Google Cloud. You deploy an application and choose resources and location, while Cloudways handles a large part of the server stack. This provides more control than shared hosting without requiring every command-line administration task.
It is not a conventional low-cost bundle. A domain, mail service, premium CDN options, backup usage and specialist support can be separate decisions. That modularity helps experienced teams and confuses buyers expecting one checkout to include everything.
Why Bangalore matters—but does not solve speed alone
Hosting close to a predominantly Indian audience can reduce network distance, which is one component of page response time. Cloudways lists Bangalore among locations for supported providers. A CDN can still help users spread across India and abroad.
Server geography cannot rescue an oversized page. Image compression, caching, database health and a restrained plugin stack remain essential. Location is one input; page weight, caching and PHP workers decide most of what a visitor in Pune or Patna actually feels.
Cost control and operational fit
The $11 DigitalOcean entry point includes 2 GB RAM, one vCPU, 50 GB storage and 2 TB bandwidth on the checked pricing page. Hourly billing is helpful for experiments; a production server normally runs continuously and reaches its monthly amount. Offsite backup storage is charged separately, so model actual retention and server count.
A small agency can place multiple applications on a server, but isolation and resource contention need thought. A high-value store may deserve its own server. Scaling resources upward is straightforward; scaling back and provider-specific limits should be checked before an emergency.
Reading your first Cloudways bill
Cloudways bills after the fact. The Cloudways pricing page says usage is tracked through the month and the invoice arrives on the 1st of the next month, so the first charge lands weeks after you start the server. I tell clients to expect that surprise and to read the invoice line by line the first time.
Here is an illustrative example for a small business site on the entry DigitalOcean server, using the prices listed on 30 October 2026. The 20 GB of stored backups is my own assumption, not a Cloudways figure:

So the realistic figure is closer to $16 than $11, plus tax at your billing country’s rate and whatever your bank adds for a dollar payment. Hourly billing helps when you test: on DigitalOcean the hourly rate is the monthly price divided by 672 hours, capped at the monthly price. Stopping a server does not stop the meter, though. Only deleting it does.
The trial length is worth checking too. On 30 October 2026 the Flexible plan FAQ on the Cloudways pricing page said five days with no card. The three-day trial on the same page belongs to Cloudways Autonomous, the separate fully managed plan covered below. Cloudways changes trial lengths, so check the sign-up page before you plan your test.
The payment trap that deletes sites
This is the part I would not skim. The pricing FAQ sets out what happens if an invoice stays unpaid: the dashboard is restricted on day 7, servers are stopped on day 10, apps and servers are deleted on day 13, and backups go on day 28. A failed card is the usual cause, so before you go live check that your card is enabled for international online payments, keep a second payment method on the account, or put funds in the account wallet in advance. If you have a GST registration, add your GSTIN before the first invoice; the FAQ says the exemption applies only to future invoices.
Flexible or Autonomous?
Everything above is Cloudways Flexible: you pick the cloud provider, server size and location, and you decide when to scale. The Cloudways pricing page (seen 30 October 2026) also sells Cloudways Autonomous, a fully managed WordPress plan that autoscales for you. Its Growth plan was listed at $99 a month, with one website, 20 GB disk, 150 GB bandwidth, unmetered visits, 100 PHP workers per server, Cloudflare Enterprise CDN, Redis and Object Cache Pro included.
The catch is the metering above the baseline: extra disk at $1 per GB, bandwidth at $0.04 per GB and autoscaling at $0.07 per hour per server, per the same page. Autonomous has a three-day free trial. For one busy WooCommerce or LMS site where traffic spikes are the problem, Autonomous removes the resize-at-midnight job. Each Autonomous plan covers one website and runs on Google Cloud, per the pricing FAQ. For a handful of normal sites, one Flexible server is far cheaper, because you can put several applications on it.
Support and the add-ons that change the bill
Cloudways lists 24/7 support on all plans. The standard chat covers the server and platform; help with your plugins, themes and performance tuning is the Advance Support add-on, listed at $100 a month or 10% of the invoice, with a lifetime offer of $25 a month flat shown on 30 October 2026. Other add-ons on the pricing page are priced per app or per domain: Cloudflare Enterprise from $4.99 per domain a month, malware protection from $4 per app a month, Site Manager from $3 per app a month and Rackspace mail at $1.50 per mailbox a month.
On an agency server with ten client apps, per-app add-ons multiply fast: malware protection alone would be $40 a month, more than the server. I enable add-ons only on the sites that earn money and keep a free uptime monitor and a plugin-level firewall on the rest.
Who runs Cloudways
Cloudways is owned by DigitalOcean, the US-listed cloud company. DigitalOcean completed the $350 million purchase of Cloudways Ltd., a company registered in Malta, on 1 September 2022, per its SEC filing and press release. In practice that means DigitalOcean is the default provider in the dashboard and the free trial, but you can still pick Vultr, Linode, AWS or Google Cloud on Flexible.
When Cloudways is worth the step up
Move to Cloudways when a site has measurable traffic, revenue or operational requirements that shared hosting no longer serves. The strongest reasons are location choice, resource visibility, staging workflows, scaling and flexible billing—not status. A new brochure site with twenty visits a day will rarely use the extra capability.
Choose Hostinger or Bluehost for a simpler bundled start. Choose Cloudways when you or a technical partner can own application maintenance and want the hosting layer to grow with the site.

Check that email, which Cloudways does not bundle like shared hosting does, has its own home before you cancel the old plan.
How do I stop paying for Cloudways?
Delete your servers and deactivate any paid add-ons; that is what stops billing. Stopping a server does not help, because the resources stay allocated and charges continue.
